An Overview of Sexual Harassment
Sexual harassment is one of the biggest problems facing our schools and businesses today. A week rarely goes by without a reminder of the pervasiveness of sexual harassment as a social problem. Sexual harassment is a growing problem in the government agencies, schools, and the corporations of the world; however, many corporations are now adopting new anti-harassment policies. (Conta) The definition of sexual harassment is any unwanted or inappropriate sexual attention. That includes touching, looks, comments, or gestures. A key part of sexual harassment is that it is one sided and unwanted. There is a great difference between sexual arassment and romance or friendship, since those are mutual feelings of two people. Often sexual harassment makes the victim feel guilty, but it is important for the victim to remember that it is not their fault, the fault lies totally on the person who is the harasser. Many times fear is involved in sexual harassment because it isn't about physical attraction, it's about power. In fact, many sexual harassment incidents take place when one person is in a position of power over the other; or when a woman has an untraditional job such as a police officer, factory worker, business executive, or ny other traditionally male job. Typical victims of harassment are young, single, college-educated, members of a minority racial or ethnic group (if male), in a trainee position (or office/ clerical positions if male), or have an immediate supervisor of the opposite Presently, it is hard for courts and others to decide when sexual harassment has taken place because the definition of sexual harassment is much too broad. Clearing up the legal definition of sexual harassment would discourage and punish harassers and bring comfort to the victims. Here are some points to remember in deciding hen sexual harassment takes place: Sexual harassment is one-sided and * It is about power and not attraction. * Subtle sexual behavior is sometimes socially acceptable, but some would consider it offensive and want it stopped. * Moderate sexual behavior is not socially acceptable, reasonable * Severe sexual behavior is never acceptable. (Swisher 28) Sexual harassment is a major problem in public schools, colleges, and universities. Surveys on college campuses show the number of respondents reporting to have been sexually harassed ranging from 40-70 percent. Only two percent of campus harassment ases involve a professor demanding sex in return for a good grade. Most cases involve male and female students. In public schools current sexual harassment definitions are inappropriate, since bad sexual behavior of today's children isn't sexual harassment, but it is a reflection of the vulgar, violent, and the sexually explicit nature of our media and culture. When little six-year-old children get suspended from school for kissing girls on the cheek, it is not an example of sexual harassment but of political Sexual harassment is still a big problem in schools and every school district in Washington now has an antiharassment policy. Junior high or middle school has the biggest problem with sexual harassment mainly because of their immaturity and out-of-control hormonesâ⬠. Says Viki Simmons of the YWCA. ââ¬Å"Many times in high school, students don't think anything about it when harassment happens, but schools are now cracking down on itâ⬠. Simmons interview) In the business world employers are now on notice that sexual harassment will no longer be tolerated in the workplace. Claims brought against alleged harassers include wrongful termination, invasion of privacy, violation of due process and free speech rights, efamation, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Sexual harassment usually happens to women in low-paying jobs, or women that have to have a job in order to support themselves and children. If sexual harassment happens at work, write down a detailed description of what took place, so that it is well recorded and you don't have to think back to the incident. You should keep a note pad handy for this purpose, or write it on a napkin to help you * What actually took place and what the offender said Another way to do this is to write a letter to the harasser. Be sure to keep a copy. Tell the person clearly in the letter that his behavior toward you is unwanted. Tell the person that he will be reported if the behavior doesn't stop (Kolbert). According to the research group Catalyst, recent studies have found that 40 percent to 60 percent of woman say they have been harassed sometime in their Employers have a duty to investigate allegations of sexual harassment, and their employees have a legitimate interest in knowing what activities could result in their termination. Ever clearer definitions of sexual harassment are being implemented by more and more corporations around the country. As this happens, an increasing number of companies are searching for new ways of protecting themselves against allegations, adopting their own anti- harassment policies to combat this growing problem. CEO's should do a variety of things to stop sexual harassment in the work place. The most important thing is senior management makes it clear to workers that harassment in any form won't be tolerated. If top managers don' take the issues seriously, employees won't either. Managers must also understand they are responsible for their Companies need an explicit written policy on sexual arassment that is widely available in the workplace. Most consultants advise companies to do more than just post the policy on bulletin boards. They should distribute it company wide, repeatedly. Copies should be included in new employee orientation packets. Employees should have clear definitions of what sexual harassment is Many companies are now offering employee training sessions on sexual harassment, and many say that follow up training is a good idea. Training programs should include all employees, rather than just managers. The tone should be gender neutral and avoid heavy iscussions on male harassment that might cause some resentment among the male employees. Many times programs aren't effective because they spend a lot of time just attacking men and not the crime. Companies need a good system to deal with complaints. A clear process for handling complaints shows that a company takes them seriously. Until 1991 it was harder for woman to make allegations of sexual harassment, since woman felt like there was nothing that they could do about it. But the highly publicized hearings of Clarence Thomas and Anita Hill in 1991 changed everything. During the fall of 1991, the subject of sexual harassment rabbed news headlines. Everyone began discussing this issue and emotions ran high. Judge Clarence Thomas was nominated to be a Supreme Court Justice, which is America's highest court, and Supreme Court Justices have their jobs for life. They cannot be fired. Before a person can be made a Justice, he or she must be questioned and Judge Thomas was ounce the head of a U. S. agency called the EEOC. The EEOC makes sure everyone is treated fairly when applying for a job. It also enforces laws against sexual harassment. Anita Hill is a law professor who worked with Judge Thomas at the EEOC many years ago. A few weeks into the Congressional Questioning she came forward and accused Thomas of sexual harassment. She claimed that he used to constantly ask her for dates and spoke to her about pornographic films he had seen. Anita Hill said that she was deeply offended by these remarks but felt that she could not complain. Clarence Thomas was her boss, and she thought that her career could be Anita Hill was a very believable witness. But Judge Thomas denied her charges in the strongest possible terms. Who was telling the truth? The country was divided. But the issue was being discussed everywhere. Women from all across the nation told of their experiences with sexual harassment. And many men admitted being Finally, the senate voted to approve Judge Thomas. But the vote was close. Many senators had doubts about Thomas's character. Others did not the, Thomas's career should be destroyed because of one person's story. They said there was not enough evidence to prove there was wrongdoing. In the end, everyone agreed that sexual harassment is a serious problem everyone must become more sensitive It's important to know that men have trouble too. Women are not the only victims of sexual harassment. More and more men are being harassed in the workplace, classrooms, and locker rooms. Whoever is in the position of power tends to be the harasser. Men can be victims of both woman and other men Sexual harassment is very wide spread, but there are ways of avoiding it, such as: Keeping everything strictly on a business level. If working in the same room as the harasser, create a barrier between the two work stations with a desk or file cabinet, etc. Do not ask for personal favors or special treatment from the harasser so that he won't feel he is owed anything. Do not talk about anything personal.

Judgment and no conscience Essay
In Mary Shelleyââ¬â¢s Frankenstein; the monster is not Frankensteinââ¬â¢s creation, the so-called monster, but rather Frankenstein the creator.à Society views monsters as ugly beasts that are a sigh of destruction and commonly depicted as having no since of judgment and no conscience.à However, not all monsters fit this common description.à Some monsters can hide beneath seemingly normal physical appearances.à In, Frankenstein, it is the creator who is the monster and not the creature.à The creature is a reflexion of the creator. Frankenstein is the monster for many reasons: first, he goes to charnel houses and searches around for body parts to create a perfect monster ââ¬Å"Now I was led to examine the cause and progress of this decay, and forced to spend days and nights in vaults and charnel houses.â⬠(56).à He was searching through body remains, he seems unbothered by the dead people that surround him, and in fact he almost is happy ââ¬Å"suddenly a light broke upon me brilliant and yet so simpleâ⬠(56). Heââ¬â¢s happy finding the parts for his creation. Once Frankenstein has created his being he is appalled by it, â⬠I had selected is features as beautiful. Beautiful! Great Godâ⬠(60). He seems to finally see what he was creating and have become aware of the vast differences that common man will see in the creature. So, astonished by his creations grotesqueness he abandons it ââ¬Å"Unable to endure aspect of the being I had created, I rushed out of the room, and continue the longtime traversing my bedchamber unable to sleep.â⬠(61) Rather then Frankenstein being a normal parent he is monstrous and abandons his creation, he isnââ¬â¢t like human parents that donââ¬â¢t betray their babies they take care and nurture them. Killing is also trait of monsters. Frankenstein has a dream that he is talking to his father, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m not mad, I cried energetically; the sun in the heavens that was viewed my operations, and bear witness of my truth. Iââ¬â¢m the assassin of those most innocent victims; they died by machinations.â⬠(160). In Frankensteinââ¬â¢s dream he talks to his father about the killing heââ¬â¢s had to do to rescue the human race the room his own creation. When Justine was being framed for a murder she didnââ¬â¢t compete it was Frankenstein that new the true character. However he didnââ¬â¢t help her and as a result, she was sentenced to death. Frankenstein was a monster for not only abandoning his creature but for also killing, and picking through the remains of people. It is his hideous behavior that doesnââ¬â¢t resemble human nature; only a monster could be as monstrous as Frankenstein. Frankensteinââ¬â¢s creation the ââ¬Å"monsterâ⬠is grotesque looking ; he fits the commons monster description in terms of appearance, made up of dead peoplesââ¬â¢ remains. The quote seen here just as Frankenstein created the creation ââ¬Å"his yellow skin scarcely covered the work of muscles and arteries beneath; his hair was of luscious black, flowing; his teeth of pearly whiteness; but these luxurious only formed more horrid contrast with his watery eyes, that seamed almost of the same colors the dun white sockets in which they were set, his shriveled complexion and straight black lips.â⬠(60). Later in the story he sees a little girl playing and when she starts to slip he saves her ââ¬Å"Her foot slipped, and she fell into the rapid stream. I rushed from my hiding place; and with extreme labor from the force of the current, saved her, and dragged her to shore.â⬠(125) He tries to save the little girl, however his act of kindness is taken as though heââ¬â¢s trying to kill the girl. And he is even shot at by the girlââ¬â¢s father. Because of this incident the monster becomes enraged that his efforts not only will go on praised but also will be shot out for them. Because his creator has abandoned him, the creature starts to take revenge on all of man, for being so cruel to him. The creation begins to take on more and more behavior that could be interpreted as monstrous, though it is not his fault. Frankensteinââ¬â¢s creation kills Frankensteinââ¬â¢s little brother, however it is not an act of a monster it is an act of a creature that has had no guidance and the fault of his killing belongs to Frankenstein, because he was the creator and should be the teacher in the guide is well. Frankensteinââ¬â¢s creation though it is called a monster isnââ¬â¢t the monster in Mary Shelley in the book Frankenstein that she was writing about. Frankensteinââ¬â¢s creation is no monster. He knows the difference between right and wrong. We can see this because he feels guilty when he does something that is wrong ââ¬Å"No, guilt, no mischief, no malignity, no misery, can be found comparable to mineâ⬠(188). The creation also knows the difference between good and bad. This is seen in his final statements ââ¬Å"Am I to be thought the only criminal, when all of human kind sinned against me?â⬠(188) The monster also feels human traits such as hunger, and thirst. Feeling these traits is typically a and aspects of all humans. ââ¬Å"Oh, that I have for ever remained in my native would, youââ¬â¢re known nor felt beyond the sensations of hunger, thirst, and heat!â⬠(109). This is no monster, this is a creature created without guidance, which sees his way through books, and the watching of others. While some people would look at the creation and see him has a monster only for his grotesque nature, it is not his fault that he was made from dead corpses, which Frankenstein found at charnel housed and vaults. The monster is always trying to do well; he does not want to be shunned from society he wants to be accepted. The creature lives in the forest in the woods near a cottage and was resting when, ââ¬Å"Her foot slipped, and she fell into the rapid string. I rushed for my hiding place; and, with extreme labor from the force of the current, saved her, and dragged her to shore.â⬠(125) A being that is a monster would never try to save a life. Yet we see here Frankensteinââ¬â¢s creation saving a little girl. Heââ¬â¢s no monster, for monsters donââ¬â¢t have the will to save, the will to keep life alive. This is not the only instance where we see the creation trying to help trying to make others happy. The monster though out the novel feels allot of sorrow and other human emotions, as he learns more he reflex on his own self in comparison to society. ââ¬Å"I cannot describe to use the agony that these reflections inflicted upon me I tried to dispel them but sorrow only increased with knowledge blow, that I have for ever remained in my native would, youââ¬â¢re known nor felt beyond the sensations of hunger, thirst, and heat.â⬠(109) Here Frankensteinââ¬â¢s creation is talking to us about sorrow he feels. He feels the sorrow because he knows heââ¬â¢s not accepted into society. A being that knows the difference between acceptances and non-acceptance cannot be a monster for monsters are hideous creatures that donââ¬â¢t know; they simply do. Frankensteinââ¬â¢s creation never simply does without thinking about the consequence, he feels guilty. ââ¬Å"No guilt, no mischief, malignity can be found comparable to mine.â⬠(188) Frankenstein is the true projection of what a monster is. He continually displays monstrous behavior. Picking though corpses isnââ¬â¢t something that someone who isnââ¬â¢t a monster would do. Frankenstein also abandons life that he creates; this is something that no parent would do. He also kills people; this is a true sigh of a monster. Although his body does not look like that of the typical ââ¬Å"monsterâ⬠he creates a reflexion of his inner monstrous identity though his creation. Frankenstein is thus trying to create the perfect depiction of him, a monster that is so great he will be able to have strength and also brains.

Technology and media-should counterculture be primitive or cutting Essay
Technology and media-should counterculture be primitive or cutting edge(need to elaborate) - Essay Example It assumes that one has to give up something in order to gain another. In this case, for the artist to continue his or her work, he or she has to give up the creative independence and submit to the dictates of corporate hegemony where art lacks the originality and virtuosity that ideally characterizes art but rather seeks for mainstream validation that would make it profitable thus reducing art as a mere business endeavor. Kurt Andersen made an insigthful analysis in his thought provoking article in Vanity Fair on how business corrupts art. He argued that the contemporary artistic phenomenon and those crafted twenty years ago were basically the same in consonance to the commercial art maxim that there is nothing new or original in this universe except the artistic capacity of packaging and delivering old ideas in new forms and formats. Andersen further argued that ââ¬Å"Lady Gaga has replaced Madonna, Adele has replaced Mariah Carey- both distinctions without a real differenceâ⬠¦ (Andersen 2).â⬠Art then as treated by mainstream media with its corporate funding is gauge not by its ââ¬Å"soulâ⬠or social and artistic relevance and value, but rather on its economic value. Taking these arguments at its face value, it seems that these are extreme positions about art where nobody wins. Art by its purist form will inevitably die due to lack of resources or funding to even continue itself while commercializing it will deliberately sacrifice creativity for commercial acceptance and succes. This problematic situation warrants for an exploration of options whereby art can pursue itself by reconciling with mainstrain media without losing its creativity and artistic independence. All is not grim for purist art however. Despite its limited resources and its effort to insulate from the dictate of mainstream media, purist art had success in the recent decades which tells that there is a chance that purist art will be ââ¬Å"embraced by the commercial mainstrea m to a substantial extent (King 1)â⬠. If it does, it means that Indie art can avail of the advantages of technology and resources present in mainstream media without selling or compromising itself. Should mainstream media embrace Indie art, the latter can then capitalize on the exploiting cutting edge options to bolster its USP of creating immense spectacles, forging larger than life creations and take over the mainstream audience with its pricy awe and grandeur. Despite purist art recent success however, the nagging question still remains that art still needs resources to begin with its work. Without the preliminary funding to expose itself to the public, art will not have even a chance to be accepted and have mainstream validation which stresses further the reality if not inevitability of merging pure art with mainstream media. While this may sound advantageous to purist artist, this new position of pure art cohabiting with mainstream media breeds a new set of problem of defe ating the essence of art. Hibbert elaborated on this reservation saying that Indie culture not only offers to its adherents an aesthetic genre they could identify with, but it also facilitates them with a method, exploiting which they could socially differentiate themselves from the mainstream viewership (Hibbett 55). And this distinct aesthetic genre which differentiated purist art from commercial art may be corrupted or even ruined when too much technology is used as afforded by mainstream media in

Apple iPad Mini Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Apple iPad Mini - Assignment Example Apple Inc. is one of the largest producers of electronics, computers, and software manufacturers. The company is among the top ten mobile phone production companies of 2012 (Gartner, 2012), and it was recognized as the most powerful brand in 2012 (Badenhausen, 2012). To determine the quality level, iPad Mini must be reviewed from three different aspects. The first is its build quality. iPad Mini has a tough body made from aluminum making it lighter than its predecessors. The second aspect is its screen resolution. The screen resolution of iPad Mini is 163 pixels per inch; whereas the resolution of the tablets provided by Appleââ¬â¢s competitors is 216 pixels per inch. The 163 ppi resolution fails to deliver the display quality standards that have been set by iPad third generation. The third feature is the battery time of iPad Mini. The iPad Mini does a fair job when it comes to the battery life. Compared to the size and resolution of the device, iPad Mini does quite a decent job. However, when the battery life is compared with other products in the market the battery life of iPad Mini is quite disappointing. As with every Apple product the packaging of iPad Mini is always attractive. The box measures 5.75x8.25x1.5 inches. PHILOSOPHY of ADULT WORKFORCE TRAINING Assignment
PHILOSOPHY of ADULT WORKFORCE TRAINING - Assignment Example There is no single theory as of how to apply learning to all adults. In fact, there were various models and sets of assumptions, theories and explanations that created the base for the learning knowledge for adults. In an attempt to document the differences in the ways the learning process is set up, Malcolm Knowles have created a concept of andragony or the art and science of helping adults to learn. He perceived adult learners as those who move from dependency to enhancing self- directedness while one becomes more experienced and can direct and manage oneââ¬â¢s learning. Moreover, adult learners draw on their own experience that help them in learning. They are ready to get acquainted with new social and life roles, are motivated to learn by internal and not by the external environments. Knowles also suggested that adult educators were able to set a cooperative atmosphere for their learning in the classroom, identified their specific needs and interests, developed learning object ives that were based on the learning needs and interests (Adult learning theories, n.d.). Besides, Knowles stated that adult learning activities such as roles plays, various scenarios and inquiry- based dialogues challenged adult learners to thinking, they were also active participants of the problem solving exercise and used appropriate technological resources in their learning. All these activities were defined as active adult learning, which Knowles studied in his theory. His Adult Learning Concept reflected similarities in the adult and child classroom, however, adults generally had different motivations that engaged them to learning. This concept have also reflected differences from the traditional teacher- centered models of child and the educational process as it was. What is important in Knowles theory is that instructors should be familiar with it, because it helps to develop effective lessons and deliver knowledge in the most
Account principle Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Account principle - Essay Example b) It is a tool to control the activities of different subunits within the organisation. c) Budget exercise is used as a tool for forecasting and it can be used to motivate employees towards the set goals. Budgetary activity facilitates the planning process of the firm in a systematised manner keeping in view the organizational goals. Budget not only helps allocate resources and set the direction of the firm but also helps determine priorities to act in a manner that can bring results. Since budget sets targets in numbers, monitoring becomes easy and effective; it helps guide and coordinate activities of different functional units within the organisation. For startup businesses, a budget acts like a roadmap that helps them formulate goals and assess their functioning. For established businesses, a budget helps them see their performance through the years and likely future growth prospects to justify their capital investments. By comparing actual and budgeted figures, management can s ee how well or bad their organisation is sailing through in the marketplace. Budgets help forecast the need of cash flow without which any business is likely to strangle and suffer immensely. Budget brings efficiency in the operation by providing a framework for performance evaluation of different unit heads and the whole organisation. Budget is the best way of controlling expenses and to take remedial measures as and when becomes necessary ((Budgets and Budgeting, 2012). Answer (B) Conventional budgeting works best when conditions are relatively stable and market is continuously growing. In a downturn, the approach has several fallacies. There is no doubt that conventional budgeting system has contributed a lot ever since corporations began working in a more systematized way yet it is a fact that conventional budgeting system has its own strengths and weaknesses. Conventional budgeting exercise looks at the numbers of the previous year and then depending on the targeted growth deci des for expense and revenue figures. Traditional budget is also known as incremental budgeting. Some of the advantages of the conventional budget are: a) It is more stable and brings gradual change. b) It is more simple and easy to work on it. c) Any changes can be observed easily. d) It is easy for managers to run their department on traditional budget formulations. e) The impact of change is visible clearly. Following disadvantages are observed in the conventional budgeting (Stokdyk, 2007). f) There is not enough space for new ideas. g) Cost reduction is not provided with suitable incentives; spending up to budgeted figure gets natural encouragement so that next yearââ¬â¢s budget do not get converted to a reduced amount. h) It is likely that priority may have changed after budgets are set; and budgeted figure may have gone out of date due to inflation or extraneous factor that has now no connection to the level of activity and type of work being performed. Budgetary Control thr ough Variance Measurement Variance analysis sets the process for budgetary control. Any change from the budgeted figure is known as variance and variance can be either favorable or adverse. When revenue is higher or expense is less than expected, a favorable variance occurs. An adverse variance is said to have occurred when revenues are lower or expenditures are higher than forecast. Budget needs to be monitored for variance for a suitable time period so that timely remedial action can be taken. A following illustration speaks about favorable and adverse variance with respect to expense and revenue generated in a typical organization. Adverse/Favourable Variance Yearly Budget Pro rata monthly Budget Monthly Actual Variance Labour Charges ?360,000 ?30,000 ?31,500 ?1,500 (adverse) Raw Materials ? 720,000 ? 60,000 ?62,500

The Comparison and Contrast of Marijuana and other Harder Drugs Essay - 5
The Comparison and Contrast of Marijuana and other Harder Drugs - Essay Example Marijuana is different from heroin and cocaine in that it is a ââ¬Ënaturalââ¬â¢ drug, not a derived drug. It is known by many names such as pot, weed, grass, and skunk; all terms, however, refer to the ââ¬Å"dried, shredded leaves, stems, seeds, and flowers of the cannabis plant.â⬠(NDIC, 2003a, p.2) Heroin, on the other hand, is derived from opium; although opium itself is a natural substance extracted from the ââ¬Å"seedpod of the opium poppyââ¬â¢ (NDIC, 2003b, p.2) heroin is manufactured from morphine which is an element of opium. Cocaine is derived from the coca leaf in South America and has to go through a chemical process to become cocaine. (NDIC, 003c, p.2) There are clear evidence and statistics reporting on death by overdose of pure cocaine and heroin use but I was unable to locate any such evidence of death by pure marijuana use.1 Heroin and cocaine, being powders (other than heroin sold in solid form in the west of the US) can be mixed with other substances like sugar, powdered cleaning agents and strychnine before being sold and thus create the risk of death, whereas it is difficult to dilute marijuana in any way. Marijuana is not associated with violent behavior as is evidenced by heroin and cocaine. A study conducted at the University of Victoria in British Columbia found that the use of marijuana on its own is not related to violent injuries in need of hospital attention but that the use of cocaine on its own is related. (NORML, 2007) There are also differences in ââ¬Å"long-term differential associations of cocaine use and marijuana use on decision makingâ⬠according to a study undertaken by Verdejo-Garcia et al. 2007. They investigated the connection between prolonged marijuana and cocaine use and its effect on learning.
